Compensation Practice Free Essays
Divider Mart applies the pay procedure of offering the laborers the lower furthest reaches of wages permitted by the law, however misquoting for the equivalent through contribution its representatives with a protection conspire (Wilkes, 2013). In this regard, while the representatives may not be profiting extraordinarily in money related terms, the fate of such workers is all around secured, because of the way that they have been given a protection spread that tends to their necessities past the regularly scheduled checks (Wilkes, 2013). In any case, the Wall-Mart system has been named as unacceptable both for the representatives and the economy, since it is a technique that tries to order the workforce of the association as a cost that should be limited Wilkes, 2013). We will compose a custom paper test on Remuneration Practice or on the other hand any comparable point just for you Request Now This idea is destructive both to the worker inspiration and to the open observation, attributable to the way that regarding the workforce as a cost that must be monitored doesn't function admirably either with the representatives or the open recognition, which thus unfavorably influences the deals of the association legitimately (Atchison, Belcher Thomson, 2013). In this way, while the Wall-Mart remuneration system has empowered it to minimize its costs and along these lines augment its gainfulness, it may have even been more harming than as of now suspected, if the technique is broke down from the representative sustenance and the client observation perspective. Further, the Wall-Mart remuneration system has developed to be harming to the notoriety and the generosity of the organization among people in general and the clients, attributable to the way that it is seen to move the weight of changing hard financial occasions straightforwardly to the representatives, by making them endure low wages, with the goal that the organization can keep up its gainfulness levels, as they were during the acceptable monetary occasions (Wilkes, 2013). How Wall-Mart applies remuneration practice to decide the positive or negative effect on the numerous and its partners The impact of the negative impression of the clients and the overall population is to make the association proprietors and the top authority and the board to come out as covetous and untrustworthy, which thus is a mood killer for some potential clients of the association (Atchison, Belcher Thomson, 2013). Above all is the differentiation between the idea of low wages and low work costs. The way that an association offers low wages to Its workforce doesn't imply that such an association will thus bring about low work costs (Atchison, Belcher Thomson, 013). This is on the grounds that, while the low wages might be an option for diminishing costs, the expenses related with the work turnover may surpass the advantage got from offering low wages (Atchison, Belcher Thomson, 2013). In this manner, Wall-Mart is an association that is being looked by the test of high representative turn-over, attributable to the way that a large portion of its representatives are disappointed with the states of work and the low wages offered by the association, to such an extent that they will in general quit the place of employment at the ascent of some other feasible other option, constraining the association to take part in a ceaseless pattern of recruiting and business enrollment, which thus drives the expenses of work higher (Wilkes, 2013). An ongoing report has demonstrated that while Wall-Mart offers low wages contrasted with Cost, Quick Trip and Trader Joeyââ¬â¢s, the association brings about a general significant expense of work contrasted with these associations, in this manner thus gaining low benefit edge (Alter, 2013). The investigation has demonstrated that the expense of work turnover at Cost is 17%, contrasted with the expense of work turnover at Wall-Mart, which remains at 44% (Atchison, Belcher Thomson, 2013). The general impact of this examination is to show that the pay technique for Wall-Mart may be considered to convey positive outcomes by bringing down the costs related with the representative wages, yet the general impact is that the organization keeps on acquiring significant expense than it would bring about, on the off chance that it paid great wages for its workers (Alter, 2013). The other significant perspective to consider in the Wall-Martââ¬â¢s pay technique is its impact on the employeesââ¬â¢ efficiency. A generously compensated representative is a profitable worker, since such a representative is energetic and persuaded about his work, and accordingly applies additional push to guarantee that the business will likewise profit by the demonstration of generosity and energy about the worker administrations. In this regard, the investigation showed that the efficiency of the workers at Wall-Mart was a lot of lower contrasted with that of Cost, inferable from the way that the benefit per representative in Wall-Mart was $11 ,039 contrasted with that of Cost, which was $13, 647 for each representative (Atchison, Belcher Thomson, 2013). Subsequently, the remuneration system of Wall-Mart is needing, and accordingly should be changed with the goal that it can empower both the association and the workforce to receive higher rewards from their relationship. The manners by which laws, trade guilds, and market factors sway the Wall-Mart pay rehearses Wall-Mart remuneration rehearses have been influenced significantly by laws, worker's organizations and market factors, with the end goal that for instance, in 2005, worker's organizations made associations and propelled web and web-based social networking effort to censure Wall-Mart for its poor treatment of representatives in wages and states of work (Atchison, Belcher Thomson, 2013). The law has likewise been on impact course in a few events with Wall-Mart, where it has been explored for conceivable arraignment for both monopolistic propensities and unlawful treatment of its workforce (Green, 2003). The market powers have likewise been of incredible impact to the Wall-Mart business, through making the association acquire low benefit because of financial downturn, in this manner thusly paying low wages for its workforce (Wilkes, 2013). The viability of customary bases for pay at the Wall-Mart The rotational bases for pay are as yet appropriate for Wall-Mart, albeit specifically. Vascular Dementia Essays
Vascular Dementia Essays Vascular Dementia Paper Vascular Dementia Paper Foundation Vascular dementia is the second most regular type of dementia after Alzheimer malady (AD). The condition is definitely not a solitary malady; it is a gathering of disorder identifying with various vascular systems. Vascular dementia is preventable; along these lines, early identification and an exact analysis are significant. Patients who have had a stroke are at expanded hazard for vascular dementia. As of late, vascular injuries have been thought to assume a job in AD. As ahead of schedule as 1899, arteriosclerosis and decrepit dementia were portrayed as various conditions. In 1969, Mayer-Gross et al portrayed this condition and announced that hypertension is the reason in roughly half of patients. In 1974, Hachinski et al instituted the term multi-infarct dementia. In 1985, Loeb utilized the more extensive term vascular dementia. As of late, Bowler and Hachinski presented another term, vascular psychological debilitation. Pathophysiology Numerous subtypes of vascular dementia have been portrayed to date. The range incorporates (1) mellow vascular subjective debilitation, (2) multi-infarct dementia, (3) vascular dementia because of a key single infarct, (4) vascular dementia due to lacunar injuries, (5) vascular dementia because of hemorrhagic sores, (6) Binswanger sickness, (7) subcortical vascular dementia, and (8) blended dementia (mix of AD and vascular dementia). Vascular dementia is once in a while additionally delegated cortical or subcortical dementia. Vascular illness creates either central or diffuse consequences for the mind and causes intellectual decay. Central cerebrovascular malady happens auxiliary to thrombotic or embolic vascular impediments. Regular zones of the cerebrum related with intellectual decay are the white matter of the cerebral halves of the globe and the profound dark cores, particularly the striatum and the thalamus. Hypertension is the significant reason for diffuse infection, and in numerous patients, both central and diffuse sickness are watched together. The 3 most regular instruments of vascular dementia are various cortical infarcts, a vital single infarct, and little vessel sickness. Mellow vascular psychological weakness can happen in old people. It is related with subjective decay that is more terrible than anticipated for age and instructive level, yet the impacts don't meet the measures for dementia and are not related with vascular hazard factors or proof of quiet strokes or broad white issue infarcts on CT examining. These individuals have abstract and target proof of memory issues, however their day by day utilitarian living abilities are inside typical cutoff points. In multi-infarct dementia, the joined impacts of various infarcts produce subjective decay by influencing the neural nets. In single-infarct dementia, various territories in the mind can be influenced, which may bring about huge weakness in cognizance. This might be seen in instances of foremost cerebral vein infarct, parietal flap infarcts, thalamic localized necrosis, and solitary gyrus dead tissue. Little vessel illness influences all the little vessels of the mind and delivers 2 significant conditions, Binswanger ailment and lacunar state. Little vessel illness brings about blood vessel divider changes, extension of the Virchow-Robin spaces, and perivascular parenchymal rarefaction and gliosis. Lacunar infection is because of little vessel impediments and creates little cavitary injuries inside the mind parenchyma optional to impediment of little infiltrating blood vessel branches. These lacunae are discovered all the more normally in the inner case, profound dim cores, and white issue. Lacunar state is a condition where various lacunae, which demonstrate across the board serious little vessel ailment, are available. Binswanger malady (otherwise called subcortical leukoencephalopathy) is because of diffuse white issue sickness. In Binswanger infection, vascular changes watched are fibrohyalinosis of the little supply routes and fibrinoid putrefaction of the bigger vessels inside the cerebrum. In cerebral amyloid angiopathyââ¬associated vasculopathy, aneurysm development and stenosis in the leptomeningeal and cortical vessels cause harm to the subcortical white issue. In genetic cystatin-C amyloid angiopathy, patients have intermittent cerebral hemorrhages before age 40 years that can prompt dementia. Cerebral autosomal prevailing arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy is an uncommon autosomal predominant condition confined to chromosome arm 19q12 that influences little vessels providing the profound white issue. Pathologically, numerous little infarcts are seen in the white issue, thalamus, basal ganglia, and pons. Different less regular conditions may prompt vascular dementia. Uncommon arteriopathies, for example, fiery arteriopathy (eg, polyarteritis nodosa, transient arteritis) and noninflammatory arteriopathy (eg, moyamoya infection, fibromuscular dysplasia) can cause numerous infarcts and can prompt vascular dementia. Hypoperfusion because of huge vessel or heart malady can influence the watershed zones of the cerebrum and lead to vascular dementia. Leukoaraiosisâ greater thanâ 25%â is viewed as obsessive. Subcortical vascular dementiaâ is a diffuseâ small vessel illness with insignificant or missing localized necrosis withâ homogenous neurotic and clinical highlights. Blended dementia is analyzed when patients have proof of Alzheimer dementia and cerebrovascular sickness, either clinically or dependent on neuroimaging proof of ischemic sores. Developing proof demonstrates that vascular dementia and Alzheimer dementia frequently coincide, particularly in more seasoned patients with dementia. Dissection considers have indicated the relationship among AD and vascular lesions.3 Several ongoing investigations additionally recommend that the danger of growing AD is expanded when a patient is presented to vascular hazard factors, for example, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, fringe blood vessel sickness, and smoking, which for the most part are related with cerebrovascular ailment and vascular dementia. Late proof recommends that the vascular procedures in the two issue may commonly initiate one another. Apolipoprotein E may assume a job in AD and vascular dementia. Apolipoprotein E-IV likewise expands the danger of dementia in stroke survivors and is a solid hazard factor for the advancement of cerebral amyloid angiopathy in patients with AD. In old people, numerous instances of dementia might be brought about by the aggregate impact of cerebrovascular and Alzheimer pathology. 33% of patients with vascular dementia are found to have huge Alzheimer malady pathology with cholinergic shortfalls in the core basalis of Meynert. Vascular intellectual issue (VCD) is another term used to depict a specific heavenly body of psychological and utilitarian hindrance range thatâ ranges from vascular subjective weakness (VCI) toâ subcortical vascular dementia, poststroke dementia, and blended dementia.2 Clinical Care The backbone of the board of vascular dementia is the anticipation of new strokes. This incorporates overseeing antiplatelet tranquilizes and controlling major vascular hazard factors. Ibuprofen has likewise been found to slow the movement of vascular dementia. Ongoing rules from the American Psychiatric Association give both treatment standards and conceivable explicit treatments. Medication treatment is fundamentally used to forestall further intensifying of vascular dementia by treating the basic illness, for example, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes mellitus. Antiplatelet specialists are shown. Pentoxifylline and, to a progressively restricted degree, ergoloid mesylates (Hydergine), might be helpful for expanding cerebral blood stream. In the European Pentoxifylline Multi-Infarct Dementia Study, which is a twofold blinded, fake treatment controlled, multicenter study, treatment with pentoxifylline was seen as helpful for patients with multi-infarct dementia. Huge improvement was seen in the scales utilized for surveying scholarly and subjective capacity. Neuroprotective medications, for example, nimodipine, propentofylline, and posatirelin are at present under investigation and might be helpful for vascular dementia. Expanding proof backings the association of the cholinergic framework in vascular dementia, like that seen in Alzheimer dementia. In any case, no cholinesterase inhibitors have been affirmed to date for the treatment of vascular dementia, regardless of positive outcomes in clinical preliminaries with this prescription. The general administration of dementia incorporates suitable referral to network administrations, judgment and dynamic with respect to lawful and moral issues (eg, driving, competency, advance mandates), and thought of guardian stress. Diet In the Rotterdam study, an expanded danger of vascular dementia was related with complete fat admission, while fish utilization was contrarily identified with dementia. Low degrees of folate, nutrient B-6, and nutrient B-12 are related with expanded homocysteine levels, a hazard factor for stroke.

7 Tips for Financial Caregivers
7 Tips for Financial Caregivers 7 Tips for Financial Caregivers 7 Tips for Financial CaregiversTaking over the finances from an elderly relative can be difficult, so here is some expert advice to help you navigate that delicate process. We recently wrote about an uncomfortable conversation you may need to have one day when you may have an elderly relative who will need you to take an active role in their finances. They may not agree that you need to take an active role in their finances, however, which is where the awkwardness of the conversation would likely come in. We already covered the best way to start that conversation and navigate it in a sensitive manner, but even if it goes well, thatâs only the beginning.Being a financial caregiver can be difficult, stressful, and emotionally draining. But you can also take some satisfaction in helping someone you love to survive in their old age. Here are some tips to manage a role you may not have expected to ever take on.1. Try to be a partner.Being a financial caregiver will be less stressful for b oth you and the person youâre assisting if you donât try to take on more control than is necessary.âThe objective of parent-adult child eldercare conversations is to encourage mutually responsible partnerships,â advised Joy Loverde (@joyloverde), author of The Complete Eldercare Planner. âPartnering with, rather than parenting our parents, is the desired approach.âAs long as our parents remain mentally able to make their own decisions, we must appreciate the limits of the parent-child relationship. Many adult children have learned the hard way that attempts to impose their opinions, values, and authority on their parents will begin a downward spiral in the communication process, leading to a breakdown in the relationship.âWhen we focus our conversation style on influencing parents to seek and accept help from others, and keep them accountable for their own choices, they can remain true to their independent ideals.â2. Get all your legal ducks in a row.Managing legal d ocuments can be confusing and stressful even when you have them all in front of you. The more documents are missing, the less manageable the task becomes.âMake sure your relative has all of their legal documents in place,â recommended Renee Fry, Co-Founder and CEO of Gentreo (@Gentreo).âFor instance, you need a power of attorney to be able to make financial decisions for the person you are helping. Without one, you can not access or transfer funds or even pay medical or other bills.Make sure your older relative also has a health care proxy so important decisions can be made on care or even where care can be provided.â3. Act in their interests.Do you want to be a caregiver or a caretaker? Wait ⦠those actually mean similar things. How is that possible? Whatever, the point is you should try to act along with the desires of the person youâre looking after.âUnderstand their intentions,â Holly Wolf, Director of Customer Engagement for SOLO Laboratories (@SOLO_labs) told u s. âWhat is it they are trying to do with their money? Is it making it last until they die? Creating a legacyâ"for whom and why? Is it enjoying the money they have now?If you think they should be spending and they prefer to save, you need to understand their objectives.â4. Look out for scams. While you want to try and follow the elderly personâs wishes as closely as possible, the very fact that they need a financial caregiver means that they wonât always be able to make the right choices. That means you might need to act against their wishes in instances where you recognize that theyâre likely being scammed.âMake sure your elderly relative is not taken advantage of by scams or criminals who are trying to trick them into writing checks, transferring money, etc.,â warned Fry. âSet limits on spending, or require your relative to ask you first if they want to write a check or take money out of the bank.â5. Keep a close watch.Looking out for scams means keeping tabs on your elder, especially if theyâre doing any financial tasks online.âMonitor financial information and online usage,â urged Matt Dworetsky, president of Dworetsky Financial (@MDworetsky). âDepending on the situation, you should be involved in the financial management of your loved one.As people age and lose the ability to manage their own finances, they become more vulnerable to fraud. Many seniors fall victim to expensive online scams. Talk with your loved one about the importance of working together in this area to make sure everyone is protected.â6. Seek help.Thereâs no reason you should have to deal with this responsibility alone.âHave another person involved,â recommended Wolf. âAll of the people I have helped (aunt/uncle, inlaws, great aunt, parent) use an accountant that is unrelated to me. That way they have another set of eyes reviewing things to be sure Im not doing anything wrong.â7. Donât forget your own finances. In order to be a good financial careg iver, you need to have your own financial house in order.âYour financial security comes first,â advised Dworetsky. âDo not put your future and security on the line while taking care of a loved one or you will jeopardize both of your lives if a financial emergency happens and you canât care for either of you. Make sure you are always putting money into your savings and retirement accounts.âItâs an important task youâve taken on. Hopefully, these tips will make it an easier one. What Is a Graduate School Scholarship And Why Didnââ¬â¢t I Get One
This time of year is the most popular time for students to start asking questions about scholarships. Admission notifications have gone out for most graduate programs, and offers related to financial aid packages, admissions-based scholarships, and teaching positions quickly follow. For many recent admits, the moment of admission initiates a series of raw moments in which the financial realities of higher education truly set in. During my four years as a Student Affairs Advisor at the UCLA Scholarship Resource Center, I learned that as incoming students decide which school to attend, the month of April becomes the month of answering endless questions like: ââ¬Å"What is a scholarship? And why didnââ¬â¢t I get one?â⬠Answering the big scholarship questions Both of these questions are incredibly hard to answer in a quick phone call, or even in a blog post, partially because the answers to these questions do not resolve the ultimate problem: a university education of any kind costs money (a lot of it). There is no way around this fact in the United Statesââ¬â¢ system of higher education. Most scholarships fit into a broad category of funding opportunities that are created by individuals, institutions, or organizations that wish to fund certain individuals to pursue particular educational goals. These opportunities vary based on the type of desired candidates, specific donor requests, limitations based on organizational bureaucracies, eligibility requirements, application materials, and related funding plans. Adjusting your scholarship expectations If individuals who wish to receive scholarships do not put the effort in to identify and apply for scholarship opportunities outside of the regular admissions process, it is unlikely that they will win any. Given the diverse functions of graduate programs, the story of funding for graduate students from within the university context varies dramatically among programs and institutions. For the most part, students are expected to pay for non-PhD programs with their own resources. Those in PhD programs are expected to teach for the university in exchange for tuition waivers and a limited living stipend. While it is true that most graduate programs offer a few admissions-based scholarships that are directly related to each university program, these opportunities are incredibly rare. Yet, many students are surprised to realize this upon admission. Every year, students are accepted to their top choice schools, and quickly crushed with the realization that they have to pay full price because their dream schools did not provide a merit-based scholarship upon admission. It can feel like the university is saying, ââ¬Å"Yes! But actually, no.â⬠Getting accepted does not equal getting a scholarship Over and over again my colleagues and I have heard distraught students and families exclaim: ââ¬Å"But Iââ¬â¢ve worked so hard! I thought I would get a scholarship.â⬠ââ¬Å"I qualified for financial aid as an undergraduate, why doesnââ¬â¢t this help me for graduate school?â⬠Weââ¬â¢ve even heard: ââ¬Å"But I got a ââ¬Ëfull rideââ¬â¢ at another university, why didnââ¬â¢t I get one to go to my top choice?â⬠And we get our fair share of: ââ¬Å"Just because weââ¬â¢re not minorities doesnââ¬â¢t mean we can afford the full cost of graduate school. Itââ¬â¢s not fair.â⬠In todayââ¬â¢s competitive frenzy for admission to the countryââ¬â¢s most sought after public and private schools, students often feel that if they are good enough to get in, that means they should also be ââ¬Å"good enoughâ⬠to receive a scholarship. But this is simply an incorrect assumption. Being a competitive applicant is what grants you acceptance to a university in the first place, but it is not what gets you a scholarship. And to answer the last question, belonging to an underserved community is not the magic key to earning a scholarship either. What qualifies a student for a scholarship? The simple answer to this question is: The students who are most qualified to win scholarships are those who actively apply for lots of scholarships. At a university as desirable as UCLA, for example, very few incoming graduate students are offered merit-based scholarships as a part of the admissions or recruitment process. Every school treats scholarships differently, so there is no secret formula that guarantees that a particular kind of person will receive one. Often the criteria for distributing an admission-based scholarship depend on a number of unique and unpredictable variables. The specific needs of private donors, regional or state quotas, internal administrative initiatives, balanced distribution across the campusââ¬â¢ student population, and market-based endowments, all of which change on an individual and annual basis, determine the pool of qualified candidates for most university funding opportunities and scholarships. Understanding the role of ââ¬Å"meritâ⬠in the graduate scholarship landscape Basically ââ¬Å"meritâ⬠is never the only factor that admissions committees take into consideration when they approach the potential to distribute university scholarships. In fact, separating candidates on the basis of merit alone would not narrow a candidate pool enough for a committee to begin making objective selections. And in any given year, thereââ¬â¢s no way to guess which factors will rank highest on a committeeââ¬â¢s list of qualifications and considerations. No matter how smart and accomplished you are, the odds of both getting in to your top choice schools and receiving a scholarship are not in your favor. Rather than depend on the potential to receive merit-based scholarships upon admission to target institutions, students should actively seek out individualized scholarship opportunities while they are applying for school and throughout their time as a student. What do you need to DO to secure funding? Any studentââ¬â¢s initial application to a university program should include multiple (I suggest 25+) applications for scholarships outside of the standard process of applying for admission. And this should become a habit that is repeated annually for as long as the student is enrolled in and paying for a university education. Yes, more applications to fill out, more work, more deadlines, and more writing. Of course, this is basically the worst news to deliver during the month of April, when many studentsââ¬â¢ dreams of admission actually come true, just as they come to terms with the hard-to-swallow financial realities of university life. Expected graduate school costs Currently, the estimated annual cost of tuition fees for California resident graduate students at UCLA is $17,000. For non-resident students at UCLA, the estimated annual cost of attendance is an additional $12,245. Professional degree supplemental tuition (applies to JD, MD, and others) is $23,745 $31,755. Estimated rent: $2325 per month for a one bedroom (taken from UCLAââ¬â¢s estimate of housing within a 5-mile radius of the campus) Estimated meals: $450 per month Annual costs: $44,200 $75,955 Now apply this information to the length and type of your program, add airfare, and consider summer expenses. Most PhDs receive a TA stipend of $15,000 $24,000 per year and that is considered ââ¬Å"full funding.â⬠Have I made the knot in your stomach bigger? Why is applying for graduate school scholarships so hard? Iââ¬â¢m prefacing my scholarship blog series with this financial reality because should you decide to start applying for graduate school scholarships, I guarantee that you will repeatedly say to yourself ââ¬Å"this is hard, exhausting, and endlessly overwhelming.â⬠The reasons for this are twofold. First, paying $44,200 $76,000 per year is no joke. Graduate school costs a lot. Second, the people who give away money in the form of scholarships do not spend money or time on making it easy to identify and apply for scholarships. This is not because they want to make your life miserable; itââ¬â¢s because they want to spend their money on your education ââ¬â not on the marketing, user experience design, or accessibility of their websites, mission statements, and application platforms. So when you start conducting Google searches for ââ¬Å"graduate school scholarshipsâ⬠or ââ¬Å"scholarships for something specific about me,â⬠there will be long lists with expired links. There will be confusing websites that lack clear markers for the location of application materials, eligibility requirements, deadlines, or instructions. There will be un-editable PDFs, incorrect contact information, seemingly arbitrary descriptions of ideal candidates, and my personal favorite: lists of more lists. Most people who make it to this part of the scholarship search process either give up without really getting started or determine that ââ¬Å"there just isnââ¬â¢t anything out there for me.â⬠Like those who depend on receiving admission-based scholarships, the people who give up after a few searches online, or even a few completed applications, just donââ¬â¢t win scholarships. Pretty much every conversation that I have at the Scholarship Resource Center starts with: ââ¬Å"What exactly is a scholarship? And why didnââ¬â¢t I get one?â⬠OR: ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve tried searching for scholarships on the internet, and I think Iââ¬â¢m just bad at it. Whatââ¬â¢s the trick? Is there a list somewhere? How do I find scholarships that I am actually eligible for?â⬠If you are asking one of these questions right now, calm down. Let the reality of the numbers sink in, and accept that finding and winning scholarships takes effort. If you want to receive any money in the form of scholarships, you are going to have to work for it. It will take time. It will be repetitive, tedious, and at times downright discouraging. Step one: know that you can do this! The first step in this process is to develop a mindset that can accept the fact that graduate school costs a lot, and enable you to approach scholarship searches and application processes that are inevitably difficult, inconsistent, and arbitrary. But if you do the work, and incorporate strategic, focused, and consistent processes into your routine as a graduate student, you will be more qualified to receive scholarships than most of your peers. Macroeconomics Research Paper - 2341 Words
Colorado Technical University Research Paper Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for ECON201 Macroeconomics Colorado Springs, Colorado March 2012 Introduction The economic growth is the process by which per capita income rises over time. Growth theory attempts to model and understand the factors that are behind this process. It is a particularly challenging area of research because growth is extremely uneven in space as well as in time. Over the past millennium, world per capita income increased thirteen-fold, from $435 per person per year around the year 1000 to $5,700 nowadays. This contrasts sharply with the preceding millennia, when there was almost no advance in per capita income. Per capita incomeâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Another key determinant of economic growth is demographic (Dilipk, 2004). The economic growth is associated with the increase in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country. The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is the value of all final goods and services produced within the economy in a given period of time. The GDP is usually reported with the unemployment and the inflation variables. There are various factors that greatly contribute in enhancing the economic growth in the country. According to the Keynesian approach, there have been identified the four variables that affects the economic growth. These are investment, saving, liberalization of the trading activities, movement of the capital, policy of the exchange rate and the macroeconomic stability of the economy. The investment in the human capital and the physical capital are also one of the factors that fasten the economic growth in the country. The demography is another factor that determines the growth of the economy. However, among these factors, research study has identified other factors that determines and enhance the economic growth. These are role of finance in the economic growth and the role of financial intermediaries in enhancing the economic growth. These factors greatly help in making the process of the economic growth faster. The economic growth is largely associated with the economic development of the country.Show MoreRelatedCorrelation Between Stock Market Returns, Inflation, And Money Growth Essay1621 Words à |à 7 Pagessignificant correlation between stock market returns, inflation, and money growth. The Riskless Asset Rate Algorithm Finance Essay - Free Essay Example
Sample details Pages: 6 Words: 1679 Downloads: 1 Date added: 2017/06/26 Category Finance Essay Type Analytical essay Did you like this example? It is known that the analysts use the treasury bills, notes or bonds rates, to define the riskless asset and its rate of return for modeling the capital market by the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM), portfolio selection and performance analysis, using the Modern Portfolio Theory (MPT). Due to the fact that these securities do not have a continuous market in Romania and it cannot be followed day by day the evolution of their interest rate, I considered as a possible measure for the riskless security rate (a pure interest rate as Sharpe named it) the free risk interest of the Romanian financial market [William Sharpe (1970)]. By definition, the free risk asset is a financial security, consequently for a more accurate measure, I believe that the representative market for the financial market is the inter-banking market. Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "The Riskless Asset Rate Algorithm Finance Essay" essay for you Create order I defined several financial securities with equal rate of interest with BUBOR, for the borrowing free risk rate, and BUBID for the lending free risk rate, respectively the Romanian inter-banking market rates for lending or borrowing on a period starting with a day to a year. The daily values of these gathered interests in the Analyze Period (AP) (02.07.2001 -08.07.2003 respectively 2 years, each of 245 transaction days) determined the daily average value and the risk associated with every financial security, measured through variance of return. The free risk security rate of return for lending and respectively borrowing is situated in the risk-return space, on the vertical axe, in the points where the capital market line (CML) represented by two regression lines using the daily average rates of BUBOR and BUBID interests, intersects it. In order to point out the fact that the values are valid on the market, in this paper I compared, in the risk-return coordinates, free risk s ecurities thus determined, with currency securities EURO and DOLAR, and also with BET-C synthetic capital asset. I applied in several studies this method for calculating the free risk rate determined in the Romanian inter-banking market and all the results where accurate, providing dates confirmed by the subsequent market trend. . The riskless asset rate algorithm In order to measure the rikless security interest rate, or the pure interest, I will use the daily dates collected from the Romanian inter-banking market in the AP period and I will define financial synthetic assets, which will be the benchmark within the algorithm. To make the comparison of these rates with the similar rates on the secondary capital market, I will rely on capital market specifically analyze tools, expected return measured by the average rate of return and the risk measured by the variance or by the standard deviation of return. The financial securities which I will define will have the equal rate of return with the BUBID and BUBOR interest rates. The riskless financial security rate was determined throughout financial securities with equal return with the following rates: BUBOR TN, BUBOR 1W, BUBOR 1M, BUBOR 3M, BUBOR 6M, BUBOR 9M, BUBOR 12M and respectively BUBID TN, BUBID1W, BUBID 1M, BUBID 3M, BUBID 6M, BUBID 9M, BUBID 12M. In other words, I used the Roman ian inter-banking market rates for lending or borrowing on a period starting with a day to a year. These rates will represent the benchmark for the rikless rate. At the same time, we consider that the market provides a continuous possibility to lend and borrow, and BUBID ON and BUBOR ON are the representatives rates in the market. The inter-banking market is the representative market for the entire monetary market and includes the risk less security. In the same time, Sharpe defines the riskless asset as a financial security. The investors which will hold positive amounts will lend. Others will hold negative amounts; they will borrow. The total value of riskless securities issued by the borrowers will equal the total value purchased by the lenders. For the daily rates calculation BUBORt or BUBIDt, in the analyze period (AP) accordingly with the stock exchange transaction days, I used the following formula: _Ec. 1ÃÆ'à ¢Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬Ã ¢Ã¢â ¬ÃÅ"1 where: is the a nnual rate of return on a day by day basis. Next, we define as a measure of the financial securities risk in the inter-banking market, the standard deviation of return of those assets. The same measure was used by Tobin. [Tobin (1967)]. In table 1-1 we can observe that these assets have a different value from zero risk. In order to determine the riskless asset average rate of return, we will go to make the next judgment. Free risk rate is actually the rate of return of a financial security which has, by definition, a zero risk. But for placing it in the risk-return coordinates, this security must have a zero standard deviation and the rate of return situated on CML (considering that the market is in equilibrium) similarly with the financial assets described previously (BUBOR and BUBID) . We also know that BUBID rate defines a passive interest rate, paid by a bank for the attracted deposits, but from the financial investor point of view, BUBID can be considered as the lending rate of return. The average BUBID rates will determine the riskless lending rate (RFRd). The average BUBOR rates can be calculated using the daily BUBOR rates, which are active interest rates, received by a bank for a granted credit, or for a financial investor BUBOR is the borrowing rate of return. The average BUBOR rates will determine the riskless borrowing rate (RFRi).In conclusion BUBOR and BUBID rates will be used as benchmark for the values RFRd and respectively RFRi. In the MPT, borrowing means the issuance of financial securities, whereas lending means purchasing those securities. Consequently the lender is an investor that purchases the riskfree asset, whereas the borrower is issuing the riskless security. In the lending case, we will consider the free risk asset as a deposit with an equal rate of return with the pure interest rate RFRd, and a zero standard deviation of return. In the issuing case, the free risk security is a borrowing with an estimated rate of return RFRi, and likewise the risk, measured by the standard deviation of return, has a zero value. Holding the riskless financial security, or purchasing it, means a positive proportion in the lender portfolio. Issuing a riskfree financial security represents a negative proportion in the borrower portfolio. Appling the previous described algorithm resulted the following dates presented in table 1-1. Table 1ÃÆ'à ¢Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬Ã ¢Ã¢â ¬ÃÅ"1 Nr. For the borrowing riskless rate (RFRi) I obtained a value of 0,086% for the daily average rate, and 23,44% for the annual value. The values and the calculation method can be observed in figure 1-1. To determine the RFRd value I constructed a regression line (CML) for the BUBOR daily average rates of return, and for RFRi value a second regression line for the BUBID daily average rates of return. The values of the riskfree rate are presented also in the equations of the two CML lines. _Ec.-1.2 In _Ec-1.2 is written the general equation for CML, where Rp is y from the figure 1.1, RFRi equals 0,086%, =66,21% and x is and similarly for the second line. . BET-C capital asset, and the currency assets EURO and DOLAR In order to realize a comparison of the free risk rate of return with other financial assets rates, I defined, in the same frame of risk-return coordinates, two currency assets: EURO and DOLAR. The rate of return of these two securities was determined by adding the return of the exchange rate evolution and the BUBID ON rate of interest (Ec. 2-1). In other words, we considered that the currency market is liquid, there are no transactions costs, and the financial securities find immediate the investment possibility. In our case, once there where transactions, DOLAR and EURO assets will be lend at a BUBID ON rate. Figure. 2ÃÆ'à ¢Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬Ã ¢Ã¢â ¬ÃÅ"2 The daily rates of return of EURO and DOLAR where calculated as follows: _Ec. 2ÃÆ'à ¢Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬Ã ¢Ã¢â ¬ÃÅ"2 where : is the daily rate ROL/EURO Table 2.1 shows the values for the rates of return and risk obtained for the AP period. Table 2ÃÆ'à ¢Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬Ã ¢Ã¢â ¬ÃÅ"2 Nr. Denominatio n Average RAP Annual Average Rate VarAP StDev Annual StDev 1 EURO 0,16% 48,94% 0,0035% 0,59% 9,20% 2 DOLAR 0,10% 28,61% 0,0011% 0,33% 5,22% Figure. 2ÃÆ'à ¢Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬Ã ¢Ã¢â ¬ÃÅ"3 Using the same method we defined the average rate of return and the risk of BET-C. For the analyze period AP, its average annual rate of return is 58,76%, and the annual standard deviation is 23,31%. Analyzing figure 3-1 and 1-1 we can conclude that the currency assets have a greater risk than the monetary assets BUBOR and BUBID, but in the same time less then BET-C, the representative for the capital market portfolio. Conclusion The method described above, for determining the riskless rate of return on a emerging capital market as the Romanian market is, provides a rapid and exact measure and can be successfully used in the portfolio analyze and selection and for evaluation of portfolio performance. The free risk rate method generates in the same time the lending riskless rate and the borrowing free risk rate, both used by the CAPM analysts for determining the efficient portfolio. We demonstrated using the risk-return space that the currency assets EURO and DOLAR have a greater return than the riskless asset and the monetary assets BUBOR and BUBID and less than BET-C. But in the same time they have a greater risk than the monetary assets and less than BET-C. That is in fact the case in any functioning capital market: the financial securities are safer, but with less expected return than the capital assets. This algorithm was applied for the capital market analyse I realised for the philosophe doctor deg ree thezis.[Adrian NiÃÆ'â⬠¦Ãâà £u (2004)]. The results where realistic, and provided a verry good forecast of the Romanian capital market.

Love and Logic Philosophy Free Essays
Benson, Galbraith, and Espeland, (1995) defines love and logic as a philosophy concerned with raising children in such a way that makes both the teachers and students more satisfied and contented, empowered, skilled and able to relate in a mutually beneficial manner that allows for the students to learn in a free environment.à The philosophy ensures that, adults demonstrate enough love to children which in turn makes the children to feel freer and at ease in the learning process.à This is very important to a learning environment. We will write a custom essay sample on Love and Logic Philosophy or any similar topic only for you Order Now Benson, Galbraith, and Espeland, (1995) notes that, a learning environment should be devoid of barriers such as noise barrier, communication barriers and also psychological barriers such as the negative relations between teachers and children. The incidences of disruptive behaviour from school children has been on the increase for the past few decades yet the education system has either been unresponsive to the emerging challenges or the educators and policy makers have been totally aloof to the situation.à This has led to a lot of children dropping out of schools and therefore disrupting their lives.à This has had other far reaching consequences such as that; the children who discontinue studies may end up engaging in criminal activities.à For the teachers, the above trends have led to special challenges in that, the public expects them to deliver oblivious of the unique classroom difficulties. As Benson, Galbraith, and Espeland, (1995) notes, indiscipline negatively affects the learning environment and therefore an undisciplined class is more likely to perform poorly than a disciplined class. According to (Cline, Fay, 1990), America has experienced a significant increase in disruptive behaviour in school going children such as; violence, intolerable behavior, as well as substance misuse.à In a study carried out by (Benson, Galbraith, Espelland, 1995), it was found out that punishment, does not actually reduce cases of classroom indiscipline but on the contrary, it causes an increase in indiscipline incidences.à All the above led to combined efforts to find a solution for the increasing cases of indiscipline and ultimately resulted in the experimentation of the love and logic philosophy which was rather correctional approach as opposed to a punitive one (Finn, 1989).à The love and logic philosophy holds that, children can succeed in the classroom for as long as the teacher shows compassion, demonstrates tolerance. This leads to the children to connect compassion and love to logical consequences (Finn, 1989). In a study of 270,000 students carried out byà Benson, Galbraith, and Espeland, (1995) found out that criminal behaviour, academic failure and substance abuse are easily avoidable by applying the principles of love and logic. Such principles include, supportive and loving family and school environment, a positive relationship between children and adults, high achievement and motivation, good communication between parents and children as well as decision making skills and optimism about the world and the childrenââ¬â¢s future.à All the above are developmental concerns which a teacher can address in the classroom. In another study by (Weir, 1997) which involved the implementation of love and logic program in an elementary level, the results overwhelmingly pointed to the effectiveness of the love and logic philosophy.à After implementation teachers were required to give feedback on some variables.à It was reported that, 87% of teachers experienced an improvement in student behavior, 84% noted experiencing improved relationships with students, 68% reported that as a result of the love and logic program, student disruptions had significantly decreased, 71% noted getting time for more teaching as a result of decreased disruptions, while 82% noted that, discipline had improved and they felt that they were in charge of the classroom. When adults demonstrate love, the children feel less threatened and are therefore more likely to learn in unthreatening environment whereby the children are not afraid of making mistakes (Cline, Fay, 1990).à Through logic, children are empowered to accept the consequences of their actions as well as decisions and are therefore more likely to cope with consequences arising out of the choices the children make. According to (Cline, Fay, 1990), love and logic are a prerequisite for a working relationship amongst teachers, children and parents in which the parents and teachers take control over the children and their actions.à Love and logic are very important to teachers in that, they give the teacher the necessary control needed in classroom environment for learning to take place effectively.à The logic and love philosophy instills in children a sense of responsibility which is crucial especially when it comes to learning activities which teachers assign to children such as assignments and homework. With a more disciplined class, the teacher is more likely to gain control over the class and therefore become more efficient in delivery of the subject content.à Love and logic, are important for teachers in that, besides passing knowledge, teachers act as caregivers and are mandated to ensure that the students learn lifeââ¬â¢s skills such as social skills and decision making which are important in bringing up responsible and disciplined children. This goes a long way in making sure that, when the children come out of school, they do not have difficulties in coping with the outside world.à (Benson, Galbraith, Espelland, 1995) notes that, logic and love is a good alternative for counselling with the added advantages such as the fact that; logic and love approaches are realistic, simple and easy for the children to learn (Bandura, 1977).à Logic and love has been noted as one of the few philosophies which do not depend on age in that, children of all ages can learn important life skills even at a very tender age. Therefore teaching using the logic and love approach allows a learner to gain in the maximum way possible due to the usually close ties with the teacher. The teachers as well benefit mutually in that, the self direction the student demonstrates is an empowerment in the classroom and it allows the learner to grow up into better citizen ready to face the future challenges which lie ahead of the students once they leave the classrooms. Love and logic takes into consideration teacher and student relations by encouraging the two parties to connect easily. By enforcing the concept of self, shared control, shared thinking as well as empathy and consequences, logic and love as a philosophical approach of teaching results into a well rounded child who proceed to the outside world ready to meet the numerous challenges and able are to overcome (Bandura, 1977). Love and logic, results into a classroom environment in which the culture is that of; self determination, self dedication, self discipline as well as self empowerment for the children.à On the other side, the teachers are able to execute their professional duties with zeal and in total confidence that the objectives and goals of learning will be achieved. Conclusion Love and logic philosophy is grounded in the belief that every child has positive traits and has the potential to grow and develop into useful and resourceful members of the society.à The children learn in a non-confrontational environment and are able to relate well to the teacher.à It saves time which otherwise goes into solving indiscipline cases. For the school, logic and love saves valuable time and it is easy for the school to improve on performance.à Love and logic is a very effective approach in dealing with disruptive students who threaten the smooth learning in the classroom.à When such children are shown love, care, concern and patience, they easily transform and are capable of reforming and are very likely to become some of the best and cooperative students in the classroom. Immigration Reform free essay sample
Immigration Reform Immigration statistics will prove how rapidly immigration is increasing, including the importance of the Dream Act, the Immigration reform, and its pros and cons. Systems that will help families that want to be in the United States, but in return help the economy. The purposes of the new Immigration reform are to accomplish a new economic picture, by creating ideas of improving our border security; workplace enforcement; to help those whom are seeking permanent residence; and new ways to improve the immigration system. Statistics They are about 12 to 15 million undocumented workers and families illegally in the United States and about 1,042,625 are obtaining legal permanent resident. California and Texas are the top states with the highest population of immigration. New York Times article included that this yearââ¬â¢s cost of immigration was 13,000,000,000, including 52,000,000,000 for education, and 1,400,000 number of illegal immigrant households that use at least one welfare service. In a (2007) report the heritage foundation added that ââ¬Å"For every $1 they contribute to Social Security, low-skilled illegal aliens withdraw $10 in total government benefits. Many even file tax returns each year using their real names, addresses, and identification numbers issued by the Internal Revenue Service. The IRS generally does not share the information with federal immigration agents. Nothing in federal law prohibits illegal immigrants from owning homes. And banks can legally accept passports, tax identification numbers, and consular cards from people who want to open bank accounts or get home loans, according to the Comptroller of the Currency, a bureau of the U. S. Treasury that regulates national banks. Enforce the laws. There already exist on the books numerous laws that, if enforced in a reasonable and targeted manner, would discourage illegal immigration and the employment of illegal labor. Lawbreakers must be deterred, and law-abiding Americans must be reassured, that Congress and the administration are completely serious about enforcing our laws. Recent actions by the administration prove that reasonable enforcement measures (well short of massive deportations) can significantly reduce the number of illegal border crossings. Continued crackdowns on businesses that have hired hundreds and sometimes thousands of illegals would also help government regain credibility in this area. Any immigration reform package must promote increased security, earned adjustment for undocumented workers already in the U. S. and an essential workersââ¬â¢ program to address future labor shortages. Enforcement alone is not the solution. The reality is that even the most anti-immigrant legislators in this country are not talking about deporting 12 million undocumented workers, which make up about 5% of the American workforce. The business community supports giving these workers legal status, so they will not be subject to exploitation by allowing them to become more able to exercise their rights under U. S. laws. 1. Using the Term Illegal Alien PRO: The correct terminology for the nearly 20 million persons illegally in the U. S. is illegal aliens. The term undocumented immigrants is purposely incorrect in order to sway the public in favor of special interest groups and only clouds the reality of the situation The term illegal alien is broader and more accurate because it includes undocumented aliens and nonimmigrant visa overstayers. the term illegal alien, being broader in scope, is the accurate term to use. In that immigrant connotes legality, the term illegal immigrant is really an oxymoron. IllegalAliens. us Calling an Illegal Alien an Undocumented Immigrant Is Like Calling a Burglar an Uninvited House Guest, illegalaliens. us accessed Jan. 18, 2007 CON: The National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) is concerned with the increasing use of pejorative terms to describe the estimated 11 million undocumented people living in the United States. NAHJ is particularly troubled with the growing trend of the news media to use the word illegals as a noun, shorthand for illegal aliens. Using the word in this way is grammatically incorrect and crosses the line by criminalizing the person, not the action they are purported to have committed. NAHJ calls on the media to never use illegals in headlines [and] to avoid Illegal alien. Alternative terms are undocumented worker, or undocumented immigrant. National Association of Hispanic Journalists NAHJ Urges News Media to Stop Using Dehumanizing Terms When Covering Immigration, nahj. org accessed Jan. 19, 2007 2. Amnesty PRO: Whether you fine illegal aliens or stick them in English classes or make them say a hundred Hail Marys, at the end of the day, illegals would be allowed to stay and become citizens Thats amnesty. And thats a good thing for America. Amnesty wont depress wages globalization has already done that. Amnesty will not undermine the rule of law. [ ] It sounds counterintuitive, but with immigration, forgiving a crime may be the best way to restore law and order. Amnesty wont necessarily add to the social-services burden. [ ] Amnesty would offer millions a fighting chance at self-sufficiency and social mobility. Nathan Thornburgh Time Magazine reporter A Case for Amnesty, Time June 7, 2007 CON: Do not grant amnesty to illegal aliens. Regardless of the penalties imposed, any program that grants individuals who are unlawfully present the legal permission to remain here rewards illegal behavior and is unfair to those who obey the law and go through the regulaà tory and administrative requirements to enter the country legally. Those who enter the United States illegally should not be rewarded with permanent legal status or other such benefits, and they should be penalized in any road to citizenship. Those who enter and remain in the country illegally are violating the law, and condoning or encouraging such violations increases the likelihood of further illegal conduct. Heritage Foundation Immigration, MyHeritage. org accessed Oct. 3, 2007 3. Deportation PRO: deporting aliens is as easy as one, two, three. The next time you hear [U. S. President] George W. Bush or [U. S. Secretary of Homeland Security] Michael Chertoff say how impossible immigration enforcement is, remember this simple formula: one, go to where you know aliens are; two, arrest them; three, deport them. Donââ¬â¢t bother asking where aliens hang out. The better question is where arenââ¬â¢t they hanging out. Go to a bus stop, a taco truck, a convenience store, the post office or an auto repair shop. No need to round them all up at once. Just arrest one or two every day at different locations around town and the message will soon get out. Joe Guzzardi English teacher at Lodi Adult School in California Deportation: As Easy As One, Two, Three, VDare. com Aug. 19, 2007 CON: I have listened to and understand the concerns of those who simply advocate sealing our borders and rounding up and deporting undocumented workers currently in residence here. But thats easier said than done I have yet to hear a single proponent of this point of view offer one realistic proposal for locating, apprehending, and returning to their countries of origin over 11 million people. How do we do that? it would take 200,000 buses extending along a 1700 mile long line to deport 11 million people. Thats assuming we had the resources to locate and apprehend all 11 million, or even half that number, which we dont have and, we all know, wont ever have. John McCain U. S. Senator (R-AZ) Statement on the Senate floor Mar. 30, 2006 4. Mexican Border Fence PRO: Im pleased that you all are here to witness the signature of the Secure Fence Act of 2006 This bill will make our borders more secure. It is an important step toward immigration reform The bill authorizes the construction of hundreds of miles of additional fencing along our southern border Were modernizing the southern border of the United States so we can assure the American people were doing our job of securing the border. By making wise use of physical barriers and deploying 21st century technology were helping our Border Patrol agents do their job. George W. Bush U. S. President, Signing of the Secure Fence Act of 2006 Oct. 26, 2006 CON: It is deplorable to go ahead with this decision of the wall at the border The wall will not solve any problem. Humanity made a huge mistake by building the Berlin Wall and I believe that today the United States is committing a grave error in building the wall on our border. It is much more useful to solve common problems and foster prosperity in both countries. Felipe Calderon President of Mexico Mexico Urges Canada to Help Oppose Border Fence, CTV (Canadian national broadcast news) Oct. 26, 2006 5. Civilian Border Patrols PRO: it is now more important than ever for citizens to rise to the occasion and fill a void in National security. Minuteman Civil Defense Corps volunteers will now patrol the border with over 100 fully armed Citizens who consider themselves members of the unorganized state militia; we have the legal right and moral obligation as per our Arizona State Constitution and Federal Constitution and our respect for American citizens. Our intent is to send a strong message to the world that we will stand defiant to invaders and protect the borders of our country. Chris Simcox Founder and President of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps americanpatrol. com accessed Oct. 11, 2007 CON: The Border Patrol does this [patrol the border] every day, and they are qualified and very well trained to handle the situation Ordinary Americans are not. Customs and Border Protection Border Patrol Considering Use of Volunteers, Official Says, New York Times July 21, 2005 6. Terrorist Threat PRO: Knowledgeable Americans have come to understand that our welcoming immigration policies are easily exploited by terrorists and that porous borders and lax immigration enforcement are no longer an option. With at least 8 million illegal aliens living in the United States and nearly one million new aliens arriving each year, the potential for terrorists entering the United States undetected is high. Center for Immigration Studies Terrorism National Security, cis. org accessed Sep. 12, 2007 CON:Illegal immigrants are not terrorists. They want to come legally to do the jobs Americans donââ¬â¢t want, but our broken immigration system doesnââ¬â¢t allow that to happen. If there were legal channels for these migrants to use, the government could concentrate on identifying the real terrorists. Instead, the government is wasting money and manpower trying to keep out the immigrant workers the U. S. economy needs. That makes the job of finding a terrorist like finding a needle in a haystack. American Immigration Law Foundation Immigrants Arenââ¬â¢t Undermining Our Nationââ¬â¢s Security. Flawed Immigration Laws Are, ailf. org accessed Sep. 12, 2007 7. Economic Burden PRO: The economic and social consequences of illegal immigration are staggering Illegal aliens have cost billions of taxpayer-funded dollars for medical services Immigration is a net drain on the economy; corporate interests reap the benefits of cheap labor, while taxpayers pay the infrastructural cost $60 billion dollars are earned by illegal aliens in the U. S. each year. One of Mexicos largest revenue streams (after exports and oil sales) consists of money sent home by legal immigrants and illegal aliens working in the U. S This is a massive transfer of wealth from America essentially from Americas displaced working poor to Mexico. Colorado Alliance for Immigration Reform (CAIR) Economic Costs of Legal and Illegal Immigration, cairco. org accessed Oct. 24, 2007 CON: [E]very empirical study of illegals economic impact demonstrates undocumenteds actually contribute more to public coffers in taxes than they cost in social services. Moreover, undocumented immigrants contribute to the U. S. economy through their investments and consumption of goods and services; filling of millions of essential worker positions resulting in subsidiary job creation, increased productivity and lower costs of goods and services; and unrequited contributions to Social Security, Medicare and unemployment insurance programs. Francine J. Lipman Professor of Law, Business and Economics at Chapman University Taxing Undocumented Immigrants: Separate, Unequal and Without Representation, Tax Lawyer Spring 2006 8. Drivers Licenses for Immigrants in the United States Illegally PRO: While increasing our national security is critical, restricting driver licenses (DLs) is an inefficient way to enforce immigration laws and prevent terrorism Furthermore, press accounts since September 11 have called attention to the fact that the hijackers had obtained DLs when, in fact, the terrorists did not need U. S. -issued DLs to board the planes on September 11; they had foreign passports that allowed them to board. In fact, denying driving licenses to large segments of the population makes everyone in the community less safe. Restricting DLs results in unsafe roads, higher insurance rates, and overwhelmed court systems Restricting DLs results in the proliferation of false documents. Mexican American Legal Defence and Educational Fund (MALDEF) Immigrant Access to State Driverââ¬â¢s Licenses: A Tool Kit for Advocates, maldef. org Jan. 2004 CON: In an increasingly security-conscious America, access to drivers licenses by people in the country illegally poses serious risks and undermines U. S. immigration law illegal aliens often use aliases and phony documents, so the alienââ¬â¢s identity and residence is not established as a result of the driverââ¬â¢s license process The argument about road safety relies on a faulty assumption that if illegal aliens are legally licensed to drive, they will all have accident insurance. But even if a state requires automobile insurance as a condition of getting a license, that does not keep an illegal alien from canceling the policy the next day. Illegal aliens generally are working in low-wage jobs and have difficulty affording insurance, and their cars are frequently older and more accident-prone. Additionally, illegal aliens often are not able to read road alerts in English. Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) Economic Costs of Legal and Illegal Immigration, fairus. org Oct. 2005 9. Using State and Local Law Enforcement vs. National Only PRO: State and local police are badly needed to help overwhelmed federal immigration authorities apprehend and detain illegal aliens in the interior of our country. Illegal aliens outnumber federal immigration agents by 5,000 to one. Only 2,000 are active in enforcing the immigration laws in the interior of our country. This number is too small to apprehend more than a fraction of the illegal alien population now here There doesnt appear to be much chance in the near future that the number of federal agents assigned to interior enforcement will reach anywhere near the level that would be required for the feds to do the job by themselves. More than 600,000 state and local law enforcement officers already come into contact with illegal aliens every day. Many of them, in the course of their normal duties on their regular beat, routinely observe and even stop illegal aliens ââ¬â for example for traffic violations. And the vast majority of these officers believe deeply in the rule of law and want to help protect the security of their country. NumbersUSA. com Economic Costs of Legal and Illegal Immigration, numbersusa. com accessed June 15, 2007 CON : Immigration enforcement by local police would likely negatively effect and undermine the level of trust and cooperation between local police and immigrant communities Undoubtedly legal immigrants would avoid contact with the police for fear that they themselves or undocumented family members or friends may become subject to immigration enforcement. Enforcement of federal immigration laws would be a burden that most major police agencies would not be able to bear under current resource levels. [ ] The specific immigration status of any particular person can vary greatly and whether they are in fact in violation of the complex federal immigration regulations would be very difficult if not almost impossible for the average patrol officer to determine. At this time local police agencies are ill equipped in terms of training, experience and resources to delve into the complicated area of immigration enforcement. Major Cities Chiefs Association Recommendations For Enforcement of Immigration Laws By Local Police Agencies, neiassociates. org June 8, 2006 10. Border Militarization PRO: The U. S. Border Patrol simply cannot handle its mission under present restraints. Its job is to protect the American public and preserve the sanctity of our international borders. That cannot be accomplished while our borders are over run by aliens of every nationality and while bureaucrats place unreasonable restrictions on how agents operate. I urge the immediate deployment of U. S. military troops and equipment on our borders to seal them against those who would cause us harm. This could be only a temporary measure to allow us to regain control to again become a sovereign nation. David J. Stoddard Former U. S. Border Patrol Agent Testimony submitted to the U. S. House Subcommittee on Criminal Justice, Drug Policy, and Human Resources Feb. 22, 2002 CON: I think we have to be very careful here. Thats not the role of our military. Thats not the role of our national guard Lets start with the fact do we even have the capacity? Weve got 75% of the equipment of national guards all across this country is in Iraq. Weve got national guard members on their second, third and fourth tours in Iraq. We have stretched our military as thin as we have ever seen it in modern times. And what in the world are we talking about here sending a national guard that we may not have any capacity to send up to or down to protect borders? Thats not their role. Ill listen to the President but Ive got a lot of questions about this. Chuck Hagel U. S. Senator (R-NE) ABC This Week With George Stephanopoulos May 14, 2006
